Children’s climate change meaning-making through photovoice

Most studies of children and climate change focus on instilling literacy (a ‘top-down’ process), positioning as passive recipients knowledge rather than active agents in shaping their lived realities. Photovoice, a form participatory action research, can help explore how make sense change, while inviting critical reflection, arts-based expression, ‘bottom-up’ process). By qualitatively examining children’s photovoice discussions from fifteen-week after-school program, the present study explores made connections between own lives through photovoice. Participants were 55 (ages 10 to 12) who participated Science, Camera, Action!, program consisting hands-on educational activities, process, youth-led across three neighboring cities U.S. Data consisted nine audio-recorded analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings suggest that helped learn about, care take change. Moreover, these processes interdependent fueled by enjoyment engagement collective meaning-making during group-based discussions.
